The Psychological Effects of Supermax Prisons

David Ward and Thomas Werlich (2003) have conducted in-depth research into the early history of supermax prisons in the United States. Their research is covered below, followed by research on the Dutch adoption of supermax prisons, and finally, the impact of psychopathic offenders serving their sentences in supermax prisons.

The main objective of the supermax penitentiary is to isolate problem-prone and escape-prone individuals from the rest of the inmates and staff. It is an exclusively security-oriented facility where all aspects of its structure revolve around the need to keep offenders, staff, and the public safe.

This particular concept of penal isolation was first articulated in 1829 with attempts of the Eastern Penitentiary in Pennsylvania to segregate certain criminals from the rest of the criminal population. Eastern Pennsylvania Penitentiary failed, however, after prisoners allegedly grew mentally sick and became insane.

Within this early attempt at "progressive" penal policy, the first form of "incentives" appeared, at this time called "Good Time" Awards.

In most forms of carceral punishment there were, and still are, two schools of thought: a) that assaultive prisoners should be as isolated as possible from one another, called "dispersal", or b) assaultive prisoners should be clumped together and only communicate with each other, called "concentration."

In 1933, the first application of the supermax trend was put forth by the Bureau of Prisons in the former military prison of Alcatraz, on Alcatraz Island. The motivation for such a development came from J. Edgar Hoover's administration, who wanted to house the most notorious prisoners all under one roof, such as John Dilliger, Al Capone, and "Machine-Gun" Kelly.

Alcatraz, the first supermax penitentiary

Without psychologists, teachers or social workers on staff, Alcatraz never had any intention of rehabilitation, and adhered to the three-pronged ethic of incapacitating, deterring, and punishing, staples of prison philosophy that still exist to this day. It was here that the first Control Unit arose, intended to confine Alcatraz's worst behaving prisoners following disciplinary violation.

The only permissible contact with the outside world was two handwritten pages of letters, sent out at maximum twice a week, and visitation with immediate family, provided it was conducted on the other side of a plate of security glass.

Alcatraz, amid a flurry of liberated ideas that the "old" and outdated system of punishment would make way for new reform, eventually closed in 1963 after 30 years of operation. In that same year, USP Marion opened. It was here that the term "corrections" staff was born, a term that encompassed psychologists, social workers, teachers, and vocational instructors as regular contributing members to the operation of the prison. Counseling was also offered, as well as literacy-development, and employment-training and development.

With the 1970s, however, a new security threat arose in US penitentiaries: violent and powerful prison gangs. Prisons themselves were becoming more violent and more difficult to manage, and in one year alone there were 450 inmates killed in prison in the US.

USP Marion thus marked a return to the old and hardened "tough" policies of punitiveness, and the re-adoption of the "concentration" model. Like Alcatraz, another Control Unit was set up in Marion. It soon became the first and only level "6" penitentiary, built for long-term segregation, and highly controlled environments for serious violent offenders.

In 1983, two officers and two inmates were murdered, striking the death toll of Marion up to 25. Following this, Marion was "locked down" indefinitely, and remains so to this day. Riot batons were issued to guards, and ankle and wrist shackling administered to offenders. During meals, inmates were now instructed to clasp their hands behind their back while their food tray was passed through their cell slot. Most personal property became prohibited, weight exercise was abolished, and strip searches, both before and after visits, became commonplace. Every newly admitted inmate received "digital rectal examinations," called "finger waves," to check for contraband. The Control Unit again emerged, accompanied by the new "Disciplinary Segregation Units." Prisoners were given only 23 hours of free time per day; concrete slabs replaced metal bed frames, and concrete shelves were installed to hold one tv, if prisoners could afford to purchase one. Visitors other than families were required to speak to inmates through bars.

In solidifying this development, the Supreme Court legally justified these conditions, granting legitimacy to the supermax-prison era.

Since then, supermax prisons have increased in numbers. Even the Netherlands, a country that prides itself on progressive imprisonment, a relative absence of riots, and low recidivism rates, built a supermax prison in 1993.

In 1997, there were approximately 32 to 42 supermax prisons operating in the United States; today there are over 60 (Rhodes 2002).

By 2002, approximately half a percent of all federal inmates served their time in United States Penitentiary (USP) Marion , located 300 miles from Chicago, Illinois, and Florence ADX, located 90 miles south of Denver, Colorado. Both of these prisons house the "worst" and "most violent" prisoners, under the strictest and tightest conditions. Both Florence ADX and USP Marion were denounced by Amnesty International for violating the UN's Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners. 23-28% of these inmates had killed either guards or inmates inside prison, and the rest had murders on the outside...

Marion had the only Control Unit until 1994, when it transferred it to Florence ADX. At Marion, the Control Unit had only 57 prisoners, most of whom were hostage-takers, escapists, inmate or guard murderers, and prison rioters. As of 2002, ADX held 47 inmates.

Life in a Spermax

In Supermax prisons, prisoners are generally allowed out of their cells for only an hour a day; often they are kept in solitary confinement. They receive their meals through "food ports" ("chuck holes") in the doors of their cells. Prisoners are given no work and very little access to leisure activities, though some categories of prisoners are allowed to have a television. When Supermax inmates are allowed to exercise, this may take place in a small, enclosed area where the prisoner will exercise alone.

Prisoners are under constant surveillance, usually with closed-circuit television cameras. Cell doors are usually opaque, while the cells may be windowless. Conditions are spartan, with poured concrete or metal furniture common. Often cell walls, and sometimes plumbing, are soundproofed to prevent communication between the inmates.

Controversy

Supermax and Security Housing Unit (SHU) prisons generate controversy, as some claim[2] that the living conditions in such facilities violate the United States Constitution, specifically, the Eighth Amendment's proscription against "cruel and unusual" punishments. In 1996, a United Nations team assigned to investigate torture described SHU conditions as "inhuman and degrading".[3]

A Supermax prison intended to fulfill such a role is the Federal ADMAX, or administrative maximum security, prison in Florence, Colorado, west of Pueblo. There, the U.S. government houses a number of convicted terrorists, gang leaders and similar prisoners; al-Qaeda terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced to life without parole at Florence upon his conviction on May 4, 2006. Residents also include Theodore Kaczynski, a terrorist otherwise known as the Unabomber who once attacked via mail bombs, and Richard Reid, an Islamic fundamentalist jailed for life for attempting to detonate explosive materials in his shoes while on board an aircraft.

Supermax Prison - History

An early form of supermax-style prison unit appeared in Australia in 1975, when "Katingal" was built inside the Long Bay Correctional Centre in Sydney. Dubbed the "electronic zoo" by inmates, "Katingal" was a super-maximum prison block with 40 prison cells having electronically-operated doors, surveillance cameras, and no windows. It was closed down two years later over human rights concerns, and was finally demolished in late 2006.

The term "supermax", however, originated in the United States as a contraction of "super-maximum," and the concept developed from the permanent lockdown of the U.S. Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois dating from 1983 when two corrections officers at that prison were murdered by inmates in two separate incidents on the same day. Since then, some maximum security prisons have gone to full lockdown as well, while others have been built and dedicated to the Supermax standard. Supermax prisons are also known as SHU prisons (Security Housing Unit).

There is a nationwide trend in the United States to downgrade Supermax prisons, as has been done with the infamous Wallens Ridge State Prison, a former-supermax prison in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Other Supermax prisons that have gained notoriety for their harsh conditions and attendant litigation by inmates and advocates are the former Boscobel (in Wisconsin), now named the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility, Red Onion (in Western Virginia, the twin to Wallens Ridge), Tamms (in Illinois), and the Ohio State Penitentiary. Placement policies at the Ohio facility were recently the subject of a U.S. Supreme Court case (Wilkinson v. Austin) [1] where the Court decided that there had to be some, but only very limited, due process involved in Supermax placement.

There is only one supermax prison in the United States federal system, ADX Florence in Florence, Colorado. However, many states now have created supermax prisons; either as stand alone facilities, or as secure units within lower security prisons. State supermax prisons include Pelican Bay in California and Tamms in Illinois. The USP in Marion, Illinois, was recently downgraded to a medium security facility.

In September 2001, Australia opened a facility in the Goulburn Correctional Centre to the supermax standard. While its condition is an improvement over that of "Katingal" of the 1970s, this new facility is nonetheless designed on the same principle of sensory deprivation. It has been set up for 'AA' prisoners who are deemed a risk to national security, who, if allowed to mix with the general population would be at risk of inciting terrorism.[citation needed]

The Aftermath of World War 1

The Fighting Ends ... the 11 hour ... and still soldiers were dieing. This is an almost ridiculous ending where thousands of lives could be saved. Was it glory of some generals??!!

The Allies won victories on all fronts in the fall of 1918. Bulgaria forces under the command of General Edmund Allenby triumphed over the Ottoman army in Palestine and Syria. On October 30, the Ottoman Empire signed an armistice. The last major battle between Italy and Austria-Hungary began in late October in Italy. Italy defeated Austria-Hungary near the town of Vittorio Veneto with the help of France and Great Britain. Austria-Hungary signed an armistice on November 3. Germany teetered on the edge of collapse as the war continued through October.

Britain's naval blockade had nearly starved German people and widespread discontent led to riots and rising demands for peace. In the early morning on November 11,1918, the Germans accepted the armistice terms demanded by the Allies. Germany agreed to evacuate the territories it had taken during the war; to surrender larger numbers of arms; and other war materials; and to allow Allied powers to occupy German territory along the Rhine River.

Foch ordered the fighting to stop on the Western Front at 11 am. World War 1 was over. ....The fighting in
World War I ended when an armistice took effect at 11:00 hours on November 11, 1918. In the aftermath of World War I the political, cultural, and social order of the world was drastically changed in many places, even outside the areas directly involved in the war. New countries were formed, old ones were abolished, international organizations were established, and many new and old ideas took a firm hold in people's minds.

United States

In the USA, disillusioned by the failure of the war to achieve the high ideals promised by President Woodrow Wilson, the American people chose isolationism and, after an initial recession enjoyed several years of unbalanced prosperity until the 1929 Stock Market crash. However, American commercial interests did finance Germany's rebuilding and reparations efforts, at least until the onset of the Great Depression. The close relationships between American and German businesses became an embarrassment following the Nazi rise to power in Germany in the early 1930s.

World War 1

The beginning of World War 1 .....

On June 28, 1914 a Serbian terrorist named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Francis Ferdinand. The Archduke's assassination triggered the outbreak of World War 1. On July 28 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Because of Austria-Hungary's alliance with Germany, Serbia sought help from Russia. In 1914 Russia vowed to stand behind Serbia, but first Russia gained support from France. Germany declared war on Russia on Aug. 1, 1914, in response to Russia's mobilization. Two days later Germany declared war on France. The German Army swept into Belgium on its way to France.

The invasion of Belgium caused Britain to declare war on Germany on Aug. 4. Germanys plan for a quick defeat of France while Russia slowly mobilized was called the Schlieffen Plan. This plan called for two wings of the German army to crush the French army in a pincers movement. A small left wing would defend Germany along its frontier with France.

A much larger right wing would invade France through Belgium; encircle and capture Paris; and them move east. Belgium's army fought bravely but held up the Germans for only a short time. By Aug 16,1914, the right wing of Germany could begin its pincers motion. It drove back French and British forces in southern Belgium and swept info France. But instead of swinging west around Paris, one part of the right wing pursued retreating French troops toward the Marne River. This maneuver left the Germans exposed to attacks form the rear.

Meanwhile, General Joseph Joffre, commander of all French armies, stationed his forces near the Marne River east of Paris and prepared for battle. This battle was later known as the First Battle of the Marne, beginning on September 6 and ending September 9 when German forces started to withdraw. The First Battle of the Marne was a key victory for the Allies because it ended Germanys hopes to defeat France quickly.

The German army halted its retreat near the Aisne River. From there, the Germans and the Allies fought a series of battles that became known as the Race to the Sea. Germany sought to seize ports on the English Channel and cut off vital supply lines between France and Britain. But the Allies stopped the Germans in the First Battle of Ypres in Belgium. The battle lasted from mid-October until mid-November. By late November 1914, the war reached a deadlock along the Western Front as neither side gained much ground. The deadlock lasted nearly 3 1/2 years.

Aftermath of the Korean War

In the aftermath of the Korean War, the country was beset with many problems - economic, social and political. The old patriot, Syngman Rhee, unable to see that he had outlived his usefulness, clung tenaciously to power. This refusal on the part of Rhee and his associates to let democratic processes take their normal course was at least partly responsible for the social and political unrest that followed the war.

Social disorder and hostility to the government complicated the already staggering problems created by the war. There were many thousands of war widows, more than 100,000 orphans, and tens of thousands of unemployed, whose ranks were swelled by farmers leaving their land to seek work in the cities. Exact statistics are not available, but in 1961 it was estimated that there were about 279,000 unemployed, of whom 72,000 were university graduates, and 51,000 discharged soldiers and laid-off workers. This provided a powder keg of anger and resentment that waited only for a spark to set it off.

The spark was provided by President Rhee and the Liberal Party in the course of the elections of 1960. Realizing its own unpopularity, the ruling regime used every means, legal or illegal, to rig the elections in its favor. Demonstrations broke out almost at once, especially among students. Protesting against government interference in schools, students rose up in Taegu on February 28, 1960. On March 15, election day, students demonstrated against the election, and police subsequently fired into the crowds. In early April, the discovery at Masan of the body of a student who had been killed by police was followed by a riot.

The most serious demonstrations were in Seoul. Responding to the Masan affair, practically all of the students in the capital poured into the streets. Again police fired on them as they neared the presidential residence and there was bloodshed. Martial law was imposed and troops dispersed the crowds.

Rhee had no choice but to step down. His desire for power had overcome his patriotism in the end. The students had led the people into the first successful democratic revolution in Korea's history, showing that Korean democracy was alive and healthy.

On July 15, 1960, an amendment to the Constitution was adopted by the incumbent Assembly providing for a cabinet system of government with a bicameral legislature. At the same time, the two houses of the newly elected Assembly in a joint session elected Yun Po-sun President of the Second Republic, and he was sworn in on August 15. President Yun nominated Dr. Chang Myon (John M. Chang) as Prime Minister, whose nomination was promptly confirmed by the House of Representatives. At this time, the Liberal Party was replaced by the Democratic Party as the majority party, and it immediately split into the New Democrats and the (Old) Democrats. The Prime Minister belonged to the former while the President belonged to the latter. Neither was strong enough constitutionally or personally to fill the gap created by the sudden ouster of the 12-year-old autocratic rule of President Syngman Rhee.

The new government was unable to cope with the situation in which it found itself. For one thing, most members of the new cabinet, while without question honest people, had little experience in government. The leaders, tasting the long-denied fruits of political power, began to wallow in its corrupting effect. The national economy had been brought to the brink of bankruptcy due to unfair tax collection practices coupled with waste and mismanagement of foreign aid and domestic resources under the Rhee administration. Prime Minister Chang's cabinet not only failed to muster the united support of the populace to cope with such problems, but helplessly stood by and watched daily demonstrations by students who thought they could sway national affairs by parading in the streets.

The North Korean Communists, having recovered from their disastrous adventure of 1950-1953, seized the opportunity of internal disorder in the South to subvert whatever effort the Chang administration could put forth. Elements of doubtful allegiance began urging "Peaceful Unification," a familiar line of propaganda emanating from Radio P'yongyang daily at that time.

The Korean War

The forgotten war .... who started it?  Fire and Ice!

This is a 'chicken or egg' question.

Two little kids (Gen. Kim Ilsung and Dr. Rhee Syngman) started throwing punches and yelling dirty words at each other. They got madder and madder and their punches got harder and harder. Eventually, Kim got really mad and knocked down Rhee.

Rhee's Uncle Sam (Gen. Douglas McArthur) rushed over and punched out Kim. Now, Kim's Uncle (Chairman Mao) came over and kicked Uncle Sam very hard. Sam and Mao pushed and shoved for a while and then decided it was not their fight and called it quit.

Kim and Rhee, now up on their feet, wanted the fight to go on, but the big boys hushed them up.

An old man came along and asked the boys - 'Who started the fight?' Kim pointed at Rhee and Rhee pointed at Kim. The old man looked things over and decided that both boys were equally guilty of starting the fight.

The wise old man said:

'When two whales fight, millions of shrimps die.'

Technically speaking, N Korea crossed the 38th and invaded S Korea en mass on June 25, 1950 and thus started the Korean War. Prior to this date, N Korea had an active guerrilla war in S Korea. Both North and South engaged in small scale (battalion or sm aller units) border clashes which had the bulk of the S Korean troops tied up along the border.

It is not clear why Kim Il Sung did not continue his G-war which might have succeeded in toppling Rhee's government. It is not likely that US would have intervened in covert warfare. Kim became impatient and gambled - and lost big.

On the other hand, the Rhee invaded N Korea, with MacArthur's tacit approval or direct command, in spite of repeated Chinese warnings. MacArthur was more interested in promoting war (and his fame) than the welfare of the Korean people. It was a tragic mi stake for Pres. Truman to allow MacArthur's vanity to dictate the course of the war.

It is true that Truman sacked the general later on, but the damage had already been done. The Chinese came in as they had promised and the War stopped more or less along the 38th parallel. Millions of people died and the whole of North Korea was devastated.

Kim Il Sung is guilty of invading S Korea and Rhee Syngman is guilty of invading N Korea. Both men are dead now. Should they be judged as war criminals who destroyed Korea? One should not blame one without blaming the other as well.

The root cause of the war

In 1945, we Koreans mistakenly believed that Japan's surrender meant independence at last. Little they knew that US was planning to impose a 40+ year trusteeship for Korea. US officials in charge of the Korean policy had no knowledge of the Korean histo ry or any interest in the Korean people. It is ironic that Dean Rusk, one of the policy makers, would go on to formulate the disastrous US policy for Vietnam.

In Vietnam, there was a cohesive united front led by Ho Chi Min and a sizable military force. In contrast, Korean resistance was hopelessly fractured and scattered in small bands in China, USSR and USA. There was no Uncle Ho or a credible fighting force i n Korea.

Some people say that Syngman Rhee had sold out the Republic to US, but in reality, the fate of Korea was in the hands of foreigners and no Korean leader had any say on the matter. Dr. Rhee, pretending to cooperate with US, outfoxed the Americans and ended the US occupation (after 2 years instead of 40-50 years!). The same goes to Gen. Kim Il Sung. Neither man had the stature to influence Stalin or US. By working with the foreign powers, they were able to salvage some semblance of nationhood in Koreas.

Gen. Kim's preoccupation with self reliance (Ju Che) had its origin in the humiliating treatments he had received from Soviet commanders in Korea and Stalin's underlings. Stalin treated Gen. Kim as a Soviet Army major - not as a peer leader of a nation. To US, Gen. Kim was a Russian army captain pretending to be the legendary Korean patriot Kim Il Sung. US treatments of Dr. Rhee were no better. Indeed. US has tried to eliminate him on a number of occasions for not following American orders!

Both men had done their best for Korea. It is not likely that Korea would have fared any better under other leaders. At any rate both men were true Korean patriots. It is time to move on toward reconciliation and reunification.

History Channel

Yesterday I was soooooo stuck on the telly I just could not believe it.  The documentaries on the Forgotten War in Korea, The Last Day of World War One and the Supermax Prison on Solitaire Confinement.

This just goes to show that behaviour of human beings are never a sure fire way of analysing them.  To some .... people's lives are just numbers NOT a person.  some thousands of deaths during wars or some laws of the land can be change for the better ... but the change has consequences.  Who is responsible for that??  Questions and more questions unanswered.

The more I watched these documentaries .... the more I am beginning to wonder.  So the next few articles are dedicated to those documentaries.

A Beautiful Hadith

Just want to share this piece with you. .......

Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) said: 'When a man dies and his relatives are busy in funeral, there stands an extremely handsome man by his head. When the dead body is shrouded, that man gets in between the shroud and the chest of the deceased.

When after the burial, the people return home, 2 angels, Munkar and Nakeer(names of two special Angels), come in the grave and try to separate this handsome man so that they may be able to interrogate the dead man in privacy about his faith. But the handsome man says, 'He is my companion, he is my friend. I will not  leave him alone in any case. If you are appointed for interrogation, do your job. I cannot leave him until I get him admitted into Paradise '.

Thereafter he turns to his dead companion and says, 'I am the Qur'an, which you used to read, sometimes in a loud voice and sometimes in a low voice. Do not worry. After the interrogation of Munkar and Naker, you will have no grief.'

When the interrogation is over, the handsome man arranges for him from Al-Mala'ul A'laa (the angels in Heaven) silk bedding filled with musk.

Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) said: 'On the Day of Judgement, before Allah, no other Intercessor will have a greater status than the Qur'an, neither a Prophet nor an angel.'

May Allah bestow this favour on all of us.
Amen

Another Hot Day

Today the weather was hot except for the occasional breeze which is welcoming in this heat.

Today was kind of tiring.  I get exhausted when I'm with my mum.  Ha ha, what else is new.   I am however feeling much better and I've completed my antibiotic tablets.  Yeah, my work thingie was a setup!!  Anguish has not left me yet.  I can't get over the fact that someone would do something like this to me!!  its so stupid.

Rob my brother-in-law told me to go to the top brass.  But I told him its not worth the effort and I just want to put this behind me and let it slide.  Many years ago I had to go to court to sue an education board for breach of trust.  I won!!

Today I got up feeling lazy and so I lazed in bed imagining what it would be like to have someone sharing your life with.  Imagining me going downstairs in my robe making pancakes or French toast for breakfast.  Ooooooooohhhh what a thought.  I had to get up to reality and slap myself a couple of times telling myself that its just virtual reality.  Oh how I so want that to come true!

But since I am alone ... my habit ... get up ... go to the PC fire it up.  While letting it run, I head for the showers.  Later, go downstairs boil some water for coffee and toasting bread.  Whilst that is in the process, turn the TV on to BBC world news.  Once breakfast is done ... THAN I am all ready to face the world anew!!

I arrived at the Longbottom's house just in the nick of time.  Just when Sara was about to come home in her school van.  Spent the day with with my niece and nephew ...... Oooooooooohhhhhhh they are sooooo cute. and Sara so grown up.  Had lunch with Sara, which took her about a million years to finish her meal..... as usual!!

Telling me about school and how she had to tell off her classmate for teasing her surname.  Her full name - Sarawati June Longbottom.  Well, with a surname like THAT yup, you would expect some.  The father had that went he was in elementary school.  He had to fight for his name with tooth and nail. ..... well ... maybe not literally .... ok sometimes literally.

My three year old nephew Zack is such a joy to be with ONLY when the mother is not around.  When the mother is around ... the ONLY person he sees is his mum.

Saw the movie Meet the Robinsons with Sara .  Played play-dough with them.

Earlier on today I watched The Last Day of World War 1 and The Forgotten War of Korea on the History channel and Supermax Prison in Arizona - Solitaire Confinement on Crime and Investigation Network.  Its amazing.

Can you believe that people were still dieing on the Last Day at the 11th hour of World War 1... 11th November at 11am in 1918!!  Its interesting on what knowledge I gain just by watching these channels.  Maybe tomorrow when I have more time I will blog them to share with my readers of what I know.  Its incredible!!

Its now 00:07hrs I just finished watching CSI and now about to head to bed.  Photos attach are Sara, Zack and my sis Luisiawati ... but we call her Luisi for short.  Pronounce as Lucy.

Jealousy??

Today was the worse day of my life.  I just lost my job .... someone framed me and I went absolutely ballistic!!

Went into the office as per normal and the principal told me that was being dismissed and I ask for the reason.  she asked me to follow her to the pantry and I did.  She showed me an empty wine bottle and asked me if it was mine ... I said no.  I told her I am still on medication means I can't drink alcohol.   We argued for a bit ... I told her I am not the sort to drink at work.  Besides if it was mine .... why would I want to keep an empty wine bottle in the fridge.  How stupid do they think I am!!  Can't they think that if it was mine I would already have thrown it in the bin??  Rather than keep am e,pty bottle in the fridge and discriminate myself??  Anyways  I have solid proof that it was not me.  BUt I had enough of this nonsense and I will not have any of these.

So I left .......... besides they weren't paying me enough.  I have to spend at least $6 to $8 - USD in public transport.  I have to travel for 1 and a half hours before I get there.

But I am wondering why??  Who would want to pin this on me??  I spoke to one of my closest friends there ... and was told that there are some teacher or teachers are actually jealous of me.  Jealous??  But why??  What have I done??  Its not like I'm going to take or spoil their rice bowl!

Oh well!!  Its ok.  At least I now have more time with my family.   Currently just waiting for another offer.

Today was raining hard and that already dampens my mood.  But after speaking to my family and they are being supportive as always.  I am sure there are other offers to come by.

Tomorrow I have plans on spending the day with my mum to help her get some groceries and later go see my niece and nephew; Sara and Zack.  Sara is now 6 and has just started her primary education, she is excited to show me her St Margarette's uniform and Zack who just turned three years old is in a rugby team.  This is the first time I have ever heard a preschool rugby team!!  For a three year old and one who is a slow speaker .... not bad for a half pint!!  Hee hee.

Learning to cope with an elderly ....  teaches me patience.  I must just learn not to take anything they say seriously and to absorb what they say as a pinch of salt.  Gosh!!  I hope I won't be like that.

Later in the evening I might spend time with my surrogate family ... Ana and her mum since its been ages since I have seen Ana's mum.  I bet there's allot to catch up ... as always.

Its now 01:15hrs so that makes today a new day!

Yesterday, as most of my Tuesdays ........... I let the telly to spice up my mood.  How sad life is to look for a programme to spice things up.  Ha ha  CSI Miami with Horatio Caine heading the team followed by Season 2 of Heroes.  Thinking that the bad guy Sylar died in season 1 and was somewhat overjoyed when I watched the trailer for the coming episode only to learn that Sylar will be spearing its ugly head yet AGAIN!!

It is for this reason that I sometimes don't like to watch a series where it continues no end .... example the series LOST.  I just don't get it.  Apparently from my friend's point of view its basically about suffering in hell.

Oh well ... as for now .... I quite satisfied with the series Heroes.  Lets see how long I can last following this faithfully.

The Justice

The Justice card suggests that my alter ego is a portal to a Reality Check, whose access to where truth lies is guarded by the superpower of my Karmic Credit/Debit Card.

The verdict or results are in and I will get the payoff or payback I deserve today through the natural laws and cycles of accountability, reward, truth and consequences. But the "return on my investment" will diminish or intensify until I finally notice or reap the message sown loud and clear. Whichever way it comes in, at least it happens for a reason and keeps my life in balance.

So today when it comes full circle, whatever the result, I accept that I will use it as an opportunity to either try again, make amends or make it right. Let it come around in its own time, keep my hands off the Wheel while this ride is in motion, or impose my brand and risk paying the price.

Cool Day

Today I'm feeling much better and I just did my laundry and cooked chicken feet soup.  I love to nibble on bones.  You know how some like the drumsticks, some breasts, some wings .... I like the wings.

Breakfast was peanut butter sandwich and coffee.  I can't work without coffee.  I am so happy to hear from Dickson though the letter is short and sweet.  How I treasure that allot.  I was just hoping to hear more.  Perhaps I would talk to him briefly later.

I was going to see my mum but .... too tired maybe later.  I'll just play it by ear.  Ana slept late so she is still sleeping.  Its  11:53am now.  I'll get her up at 12pm.

So yesterday I manage to watch all my CSI ... Ha, ha, despite of the fact that I was dozing in and out of consciousness.   I enjoy having Ana and her friends at LP.  Actually, good company.  She was extra quiet yesterday, though I can still hear  the normal commotion and "noise" of a typical teenager.  She knew I was not well and showed her concern.  Thanks sweetie.

The weather today was nice and cool with continuous  breeze blowing in.  Hhhhhhmmm love that feeling.   My fave channel on cable now currently - History, Crime and Investigation, Foxcrime, AXN, Starworld and last but not least the morning doze of news from BBC.  I just wish I have more off days.  Oh well, such is life!!

Watching Unconventional Warfare on the History Chanel now while tucked in under my Batman blanket is sooooooooooooo cozy all that is missing is a warm body.  Maybe ONE fine day.

Counting the days ...........

Head Hurts

I had the most EXTREMELY boring day at work ..... playing Tetris and Drop Tic-Tac-Toe.  There was only one class and that ended early.  Since there was no action at all.  I decided to close shop early and visit Don at the hospital.  Stayed there for an hour before I left taking a new route.

I just got home not to long ago.  Suddenly my tummy is feeling uneasy, my head hurts and I'm wondering maybe I ate something that just don't feel right.  Today i left work early.  Its a Sunday and normally I watch my CSI  :(  but I think I have to skip it.  I took some Paracetamol and to complete my antibiotic.  I am so glad I am not working tomorrow.  Means I can sleep in.  Yahooooooooo!!

I have no plans except to visit my mum which I have not seen in quite a while.  Ana's mum too called me today and has been asking when am I going to stay at their house next.  Its not that I don't want to or proud as she puts it its just that I don't have most of my things there cause since they moved to a smaller place .... all of my things were returned back to me.

So whenever I stay there she would cook up a storm for me mess her own cupboard just so I could wear new clothes.  I just don't want to put her out of convenience.  But I did tell her that I'd go over once my schedule's not hectic.

Death Card by Audrey

The Death card suggests that my alter ego today is the Mover and Shaker, whose superpower for transformation relies on my bargaining ability to make a change.

Even though tomorrow is another day, the time for change is now. Know that you can handle it and that you will not be alone in making it happen. Things may not seem to be going your way, but know it may be for the best. 'When love goes wrong, nothing goes right.' It may be time to find a new direction for the better of all, especially you. You've seen the writing on the wall and something's got to give, but it's not too late. You're well-equipped to overcome your fears and step out of your comfort-zone.

Make your best efforts to direct the outcome as you wish by acting proactively now, rather than having to react later when it's out of your hands.

(10-16 points) You are Garfield:

You are very comfortable, easy going, and you definitely know how to have fun but sometimes you take it to an extreme. You always know what you are doing and you are always in control of your life. Others may not see things as you do, but that doesn't mean that you always have to do what is right. Try to remember, your happy spirit may hurt you or others.

(17-23 points) You are Snoopy:

You are fun; you are very cool and popular. You always know what's in and you
' re never out of style, y you are good at knowing how to satisfy everyone else. You have probably disappeared for a few days more than once but you always come home with the family values that you learned Being married and having children are important to you, but only after you have had your share of fun times

(24-28 points) You are Elmo:

You have lots of friends and you are also popular, always willing to give advice and help out a person in need. You are very optimistic and you always see the bright side of things. Some good advice: try not to be too much of a dreamer. Dreaming too big could cause many conflicts in your life.

(29-35 points) You are Sponge Bob Square Pants:

You are the classic person that everyone loves. You are the best friend that anyone could ever have and never wants to lose. You never cause harm to anyone and they would never not understand your feelings. Life is a journey, it' s funny and calm for the most part. Stay away from traitors and jealous people and you will be stress free.

(36-43 points) You are Charlie Brown:

You are tender, you fall in love quickly but you are also very serious about all relationships. You are a family person. You call your Mom every Sunday. You have many friends and may occasionally forget a few Birthdays. Don't let your passion confuse you with reality.

(44-50 points ) You are Dexter:

You are smart and definitely a thinker... Every situation is fronted with a plan. You have a brilliant mind. You demonstrate very strong family principles. You maintain a stable routine but never ignore a bad situation when it comes. Try to do less over thinking every once in a while to spice things up a bit with spontaneity!

Just Another Day

Today was just another day I started late.  This week for me will be my longest week yet.  :( sad but true.

I finish work at 5pm today and went to see my mum for a bit since I've not seen her in the past week.  So I accompanied her and caught up with some news.  I left the house at about 8.30pm to reach my dad's house just in time for my CSI Miami at 9pm on Foxcrime followed by Dexter.

Just when it ended ..... my Princess came over to accompany me.  More catching up as the results for the "O" levels are just out.  So news of what her friends results were and their plans.  I am glad that she has completed hers in 2006.  So I hope her dreams of being in the Mass Communication media will come true.

As for those who just got their results today ..... All I can say is "NEVER GIVE UP your dreams.  I wish them all the best for their future endeavours."  For its a turning point of their lives.  I am so glad that its all over for me!!  I think your life ahead is what one make it out to be.

Today the weather was warm but was welcomed with a nice cool breeze which brought some comfort to our humid weather.  So I am looking forward to Monday because that is the day I have my off day.

Skiing In Jilin

I hope everyone has settled in to their new routines, schools, driving children around...ballet, skating,..tuition...etc.

The first month of school has been a gentle start for me , some of the kids took extended holidays.  It has been super cold the last 2 weeks, with lots of snow showers, and full blown snow on the out skirts.  We've blasted our heaters and used hot water bottles to keep ourselves nice and toastie.

Haven't done alot over the weekends, too cold to go out sometimes.  We've been out with Yong..no he actually COOKED for us!  Very yummy tooo.  And stayed on to play computer games at his apartment...very bachelor pad kind of place.

Simon's birthday was last night.  He is a happy camper with his PSP, and I will be to when I get a chance on it. Will get plenty of opportunity when we go on holiday as the hotel TV is usually sooo bad.

Anyways, Simon & I will be in Jilin (North East of China)  skiing from 1-12 Feb 2008.  We will leave Shanghai on 1 Feb evening , and spend 2 days in Chang Chun before heading to the resort on 3 Feb.

We will leave on Chang Chun 12 Feb evening and be back in Shanghai by 9.30pm in the night.

Gong Xi Fa Cai!!!
Love, Hugs & Kisses,
Wati

Nothing Much

Today is my first day at work since my Medical Leave.  Still daze with medication ... but better than last Friday.  At least I am up and about.

Most of my meals today were 3 in One cereal.  I don't mind at least it healthy right??

Today I had to start of the week with my longest shift.  :(  tiring as always but I manage to pull through it.  The day passes by with a blink of an eye especially when you have tonnes of work at hand.  Manage to complete all my tasks and proud of it too.

I came home about and hour or so ago.  Sat down check my email as usual whilst watching telly .... as usual.   Listen to the Last Tsar on the History Channel.  That's because I missed my CSI :(  Well, there is the CSI Sunday Supreme which I cannot wait.  Oh how I treasure my Sundays!  My shift changed AGAIN!!  Now my off days will be Monday and alternate Sunday.  But I can't complain.  They really work you to your bones!  What else is new!

Made a peanut butter sandwich and hot cup of tea ........... and THAT was my supper.  After this I'll take a shower before I hit the sack and get ready for another day in the GRIND!  Such is life!

Today ............... is so full of bad news:

1) America is in the midst of inflation
2) Heath Ledger died
3) Only God knows how the Election is going!

I think that's all the bad news I can handle for the day ... or night rather.

So sleep tight, sweet dreams and don't let the bed bugs bite  ;)

Slightly better

I'm feeling much better today.  Even though my antibiotic is for a two weeks course ... I'll and going to work tomorrow.  I hope I can make .... No.  I MUST.  There's no other way.

I didn't do anything much except for laundry.  Am watching an on old movie "Jarhead" on Starmovies.  Its about the US marines in the time of Desert Storm who were soooo bored.  Its more a docu drama.  Just to past the time while waiting for "Heroes" of the 1st season.  Not bad .... its about ordinary people with extraordinary powers.

But before that I'll have my CSI Miami for company ............ OH NO!!!  I'm sounding more like a couch potatoe!!

So my weekend was quiet being sick and down.  Sleeping most of the time.  But am so glad that I'm feeling better now.  Can't help feeling depress.  Thanks Catwoman ... you cheered me up among all my other sweet little darlings who kept me company while I was down.  Hope you guys didn't catch what I got ya.  Heee heee.

Hope your weekend was much better than mine.  As for mine .... my mum is in hospital but I cannot visit her because I, myself am not well.  So better stay away till I am better.  So probably I'll visit her tomorrow when I finish work at 5pm.  She has a diabetic problem and besides she is stubborn as are most elderly folks.  Sad but true.

Present Day

Its been so long ... there are days where I just totally exhausted from work.  Shift been changing.  Getting use to the long distance.

My good friend Don is stuck up in Changi General for some infection of his old injury of a broken leg.  I use to visit him after work.  But not lately.  Heard he's doing well and have been taking "leave out" from hospital  and be back in time for the next IV.

Today, its now 15:49hrs ... time for me to take my next dosage.  The TV's been on but I welcome some "noise" in the background.  Made lunch for myself - instant noodles, beef burgers and veggie and a huge mug of tea.  I drink loads of tea when I am ill.  So lunch and CSI sounds good at the moment followed by more CSI .... how can anyone get sick of CSI!!

So now ..... I think I'll hit the sack till tonight at least or till my next dose.

Yesterday was the worse day I've had in a long while .......  bad cough, flu, fever, the doctor told me to have a good rest and not be stressed out about work.  Maybe I've been overworked till my body could not take it anymore.

All I did was to jugged down loads of water take my antibiotic tablets, sit down with marathon Heroes in front of me on Starworld.  But I could not watch the entire 22 or 24  episodes .... I gave up after the 19th episode.  I was like going in and out of sleep.  The medication the doctor gave me made me feel so drowsy.  Food - I could not stomach in anything.  But after awhile I forced two peanut butter and jam on toasted sandwich and pizza.

Well, .... a better tomorrow .....???  I'm so glad I've got 3 days off!!

The day before yesterday, was such a bad day for me ................. still recovering from a bad flu.  I had to go to work.  I dread going to work but i manage to pull myself up and was at work on time.  There was so much work  -  lunch was close to impossible.  But I had snacks and this cute little student gave me a piece of cake.

The weather was nice and warm today so I was please but it did not make any difference since I was in doors most of the time.  I finished at 5pm sharp and went home immediately.  Once I got home did some chores and laundry.  I found out that Ana left the tap running and I went absolutely ballistic at her for not checking.   Anyways  .... that's over now.  I made dinner and sat down relaxing, eating, and watching the Aswan Dam on the History channel.  If I'm not too sleepy I might stay up and watch CSI Miami and Dexter on the Foxcrime channel.

But I'm already Yyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwnnnnning now!  Perhaps I'll just lie down and listen to La Traviata (sometimes I like listening to Opera).

Christmas Day Lunch

Today is 27th Dec 2007,

Christmas lunch was great as usual.  It was a feast and staying up all night and getting up early just to put the turkey in the oven was worth it.  My cousins from Sweden came at 12noon sharp.

We had Christmas pudding, mince pie, tarts.  the only difference was this is the first time we had an Italian Christmas Cake which was dry.  Maybe we are suppose to have it with port or sherry ... who knows.  It was not a popular dish.

Crackers were cracked and the kids excited to find what's hidden inside the cracker.  Putting on paper crowns from inside the crackers.  There were no exchanging of gifts this year as most of our finances went into food but was replaced with goodie bags for the kids.

Today was not feeling too good.  I guess its the lack of sleep.  So caught up on my sleep today and start preparing my training tomorrow.  It starts at 11am  but I have to get up at 8am and leave the house at 9.30am to take the train as its in the far east.

Christmas Day

Today is the 22nd Dec,

For the next few days ..... I'll be busy helping my sister do the Christmas cooking.  The usual family reunion will be at my dad's house as usual.  I did loads of home made cards from remnants of previous art and craft.  Not bad actually.

New Year's Eve

Today is the 4th Jan,

New Year's Eve was busy at Mizan's wedding.  Helping in with the preparation and all.  Manage to catch up on sleep after a sleepless 48hrs.  It was good just to relax and lay in.

My training will start on the 7th Jan till 11th Jan.  I will only get the job if I pass the test.  This is something new.  Its a private company.  It teaches us on how to teach children the technique on accelerated learning.  Its a refresher course.

But I am actually not waiting for that and still pursuing  other jobs.  I'm bored , broke and all I want to do is to lie under my covers and stay there like forever .... basically that's all that I did today.  But I told myself to be strong and face the world.  If I don't help myself .... no one will.

Its late and its now 1.37am and I've sent more resume.

For the first time in a long while ...... I'm kinda lazy to even update my blog to the displeasure of many .... oh well.  One of those things.  I've got friends coming over to the house and just trying their best to cheer me up.

The World Card

The World card suggests that my alter ego is The Conqueror, whose superpower lies in graduation to the next level.

Today I am free. I have accomplished my mission and feel on top of the world. I will enjoy the experience to its fullest. I have come full circle on my path to success. My job is done, my dream fulfilled, and I have them eating out of my hands.

Accept and embrace the journey taken. It has served great purpose in my growing wiser and stronger, and has provided a sense of relief in that now it's complete.

Mississippi Grandma

Hope you like this one .... from Mississippi.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lawyers should never ask a Mississippi grandma a question if they  aren't prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small-town  prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grand motherly, elderly  woman to the stand.
He approached her and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know me?'
She responded, 'Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a young boy, and frankly,
you've been a big disappointment to me.
You lie; you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realise you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit
paper pusher. Yes, I know you.'
The lawyer was stunned! Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know the defence attorney?'
She again replied why, yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigot! ed, and he
has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife.
Yes, I know him.'
The defence attorney almost died.
The judge asked both counsellors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said, 'If either of you f--- --- idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you to the electric chair'
Shelford Dec 30th 2007
30thth December was like a reunion of all my family members .... far and near. It was good to see them because I rarely meet them.
